Lottery grant to help explore Folkestone’s heritage
Today, Pavement Pounders Community Interest Company has received a £22,700 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project, ‘Between the Storms’. The project will offer a range of workshops and help people gather local memories to preserve Folkestone’s story. Between the Storms was devised and will be managed by Pavement Pounders CIC which is based in the Old High Street within sight of Folkestone Harbour. The first stage of this three part project will start after Easter 2014 and the whole project is expected to be completed by the end of 2015. Over the next 18 months there will be lots of opportunities for community involvement in each of these stages. Project activities will include: Provide Oral History Society training for volunteers to collect and transcribe oral histories of local people's memories of the port, as workers or travellers and reminiscences from the great storm of 1987; Run workshops for volunteers on devising and delivering guided walks and how to use visual material to illustrate local heritage; Provide a writing workshop to encourage people to write about memories of crossing the channel from Folkestone and the heritage of the town as a port; Publish a collection of written memories and stories and a new brochure containing the walk, drawings and photos; Work with Academy FM, a local community radio station to broadcast 2 half hour programmes featuring oral histories collected; Create a temporary exhibition of the material from the project for the new Folkestone Museum and a new website. Two great storms hit the town; one in 1703 which destroyed the town’s fishing fleet and showed the need for a harbour, and the second, in 1987 which caused the ferry Hengist to run aground. . The intervening years saw many changes in Folkestone including the development of Folkestone as a fashionable seaside resort, the dramatic effects of two World Wars, the coming of the railways and the creation of the Cross Channel ferry service. David Lay a director of the company said: “We at Pavement Pounders are delighted to be awarded this Heritage Lottery Fund grant to carry out this long cherished project. We can now make the vital transition from working for the community to working with it.” Stuart McLeod, Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund South East, said: “Folkestone has been affected and shaped by storms, industrialization and war so has a long and diverse history. It’s great to know that this project will help local people collect and preserve valuable memories from key moments in the town’s history and encourage volunteers to dig deep into their local heritage and learn important new skills along the way.” About Pavement Pounders Community Interest Company Dr. Maryanne Traylen and David Lay founded the firm in The Creative Quarter Folkestone as a community interest company in April 2010 with the aim of exploring the heritage on our doorstep. Explore the heritage on our doorstep with Pavement Pounders The Building of Folkestone Since 2010 David Lay and Dr Maryanne Traylen who run Pavement Pounders CIC have devised and led 7 local walks exploring the heritage on our doorstep, part of our Pride of Place Project. We were pleased to be asked by Folkestone Town Council to lead our tour; “The Building of Folkestone” There were two busy periods of building in seaside towns in the last 200 years The first in the 19th century, the second resulting from seaside regeneration through the arts which is happening now. This tour will look mainly at buildings created as a result of these two periods of regeneration. The walk will start and end at the Town Hall. A leisurely stroll taking at most 2 hours. If the weather is too awful we have prepared an illustrated talk to show indoors instead. Times and booking details Saturday 26th April at 11 a.m. To book please contact Rebecca McCutcheon on 01303 257946 or email rebecca.mccutcheon@folkestone-tc.gov.uk Last night saw the second launch of our journal Transitions 3 at the Dragon Café in Southwark. Second because this edition was published jointly with The Mental Fight Club who both run the Café and provided some of the writers. The first launch was last November as part of the Folkestone Book Festival. It was a great opportunity for Folkestone talent to reach a wider audience and to share a platform with Ben Okri. Heartfelt thanks to all those who took part especially those who made the trip to London to perform with us: Maiuko, Leah Thorn and Gillian White. The collaboration with Mental Fight club grew from our friendship with Sarah Wheeler, Dragon Café founder and creative director of MFC who contributed to an earlier edition and invited us to the Dragon Café to give readings. Here are her comments on the event:
Just to say a very big and heartfelt thank you for all your contributions and performances last night. It made for an amazing event, from which I have received much positive feedback already. So Cosmic Gratitude to all of you for having the courage and creative spirit to step up to the mike last night.Once more thanks again, Brave Comrades!, it was great for us all to be together and for Ben Okri also to endorse all the hard creative work that has been manifested through the exciting Transitions Partnership. Here's to many more collaborations in the future. Thank you Sarah and Ben! |
